They occur all over the world, in the Netherlands we know 7 different native species: viviparous lizard, wall lizard, sand lizard, slow worm, grass snake, smooth snake and the adder. In addition, these animals are of course also popular as pets in our country. According to the annual research by Dibevo 300.000 reptiles are kept as pets.
Most reptiles are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. Only a small number of species live solely on plants. This can be quite difficult because they mainly live in places that are not attractive to other animals, such as mountain regions, deserts and steppes.
