Description
The Red Rat Snake is the best beginner snake. The animals are easy to care for and have a calm character. With the exception of baby red rat snakes. When the young animals are approached, they will vibrate their tail very quickly and regularly swing their head at the caretaker. But after a short period of grooming, this will disappear. The red rat snake can be between 120 and 150 cm long. The basic color is light brown to orange with red spots (saddles) that are surrounded by a black border. The ventral scales are beige and black colored. They often sit together in small groups. The head is relatively narrow with eyes with round pupils on both sides. At the front of the head are nostrils on both sides. When the upper jaw and lower jaw are closed, there is a small opening for the tongue to pass through to taste the air. Today, red rat snakes are available in many color varieties (morphs). Even animals without scales are bred. This is called scaleless.

Diet
The food for red rat snakes mainly consists of rodents such as mice and rats. The size of the food depends on the size of the snake. As a rule, it can be used for this that the prey may be slightly thicker than the thickest part of the snake. You can choose live or frozen food. If frozen rodents are fed, it is important that the rodents are completely room temperature. If it is still too cold, the rat snake will refuse to eat it.
