The red-throated anolis is a small, diurnal lizard species found primarily in the southeastern United States. Here they can be found in forests and parks as well as in populated areas, as long as there are plants nearby. The male red-throated anole is about 20 cm long, the largest part consists of its tail. The males have a thickened caudal peduncle containing the hemipenis. The head is relatively long with, in proportion, a large beak.

Under the throat hangs a dewlap that they can expand. This dewlap is colored red and is used to show off to women or to intimidate other men. During this behavior, a small comb may also appear on the neck. The females of the red-throated anolis are smaller than the males and have a prominent white stripe running down the back, which continues over the hips. The dewlap of the woman is many times smaller than the dewlap of the man and has almost no color.

Red-throated anols are agile climbers and can climb almost any surface. This is due to the adhesive strips that they have under the toes. These slats consist of small pads that in turn consist of millions of tiny hairs that can grip any surface. Other lizards such as geckos also have these legs. The red-throated anoli also has the ability to change color. For example, the anole can be beautiful green and a moment later grey/brown. This is probably related to stress levels.

Red-throated Anolis Terrarium Housing Exo Terra

Red-throated anols are best kept as a couple or trio, which means: 1 male with at least 1 female. These can be housed in a terrarium of 45x45x60 cm or larger. The terrarium may be furnished with branches or stumps and living or artificial plants. It is best to use coconut fiber / humus as a soil, this retains moisture well and real plants can be used. Furthermore, a water bowl is important from which animals can drink easily, a waterfall can also be used for this. Light spraying may be done once a day by means of a plant sprayer or sprinkler system. The anoles will also drink drops of leaves and branches.

The terrarium can be heated by a heat spot, make sure that the animals cannot sit against it. Under the heat spot, a basking spot of about 32°c is desirable. Because anoles are day active animals, a UV-B lamp is recommended. By using UV-B lighting, the animals produce vitamin D3, which ensures good calcium absorption. A good mineral preparation must then be used. A good UV lamp also emits UV-A, so that the animals can also see the difference between day and night. The animals can also distinguish each other better as species and sex through UV-A radiation.

Sex discrimination & Reproduction

The difference between males and females is clearly visible on the dewlap. The man uses these to impress a woman and to make it clear to another man that it is his territory. The males also have a thickened caudal peduncle where the hemipenis are located and may develop a small crest on the neck. The females are relatively smaller than the males and often have a white stripe down the back that extends past the hips.

If a man wants to mate with a woman, he will try to impress the woman with a red dewlap which he extends and retracts. He will stand high on his front legs to make himself as large as possible. If the female is impressed by this she will admit the male and a short mating will take place. After a few weeks, the female will deposit her developed eggs in a sheltered place. This is usually under materials such as branches or leaves lying on the ground. The eggs will hatch after about six weeks.

Power supply

The food for anoles mainly consists of insects such as: crickets, mini grasshoppers, curling flies and other small food that they can find. It is recommended to feed the animals regularly because of their active behavior. This ensures faster digestion and satisfies the need for energy. Feed the insects in advance with a good vitamin preparation such as Sticky Tongue Farms Vit-All what you feed the insects. Then powder with a good mineral preparation such as Sticky Tongue Farms Miner-All† By giving these preparations in combination with a good UV B lamp, the Anoles get all the vitamins and minerals they need.
