What is a chip?
A chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Each chip contains a unique number. This number can be read by a special chip reader. Every vet, animal shelter or animal ambulance has such a chip reader. The chip is placed under the skin of your dog or cat and the unique number is registered with a database. This database contains the owner's information. This way the person who found your dog or cat can see the data in the database and call the owner.
How is a chip placed?
Chipping your dog or cat is a fairly simple procedure and can be done in the veterinary clinic in Avonturia† The chip is placed under the skin. The insertion of the chip is often combined with castration or sterilization. The needle with which the chip is inserted is quite thick. However, it is also possible without an animal being under anesthesia. The surgery is soon over.
Why chip a dog or cat?
Since 2013, a chip and registration obligation for dogs has been introduced in the Netherlands. As the owner, you are responsible for this yourself. It is not yet mandatory to have a cat chipped. Nevertheless, it is wise to have a cat chipped.
When your dog or cat has run away, the chip can ensure that your dog or cat comes home again. If you want to travel abroad with a dog, cat or ferret, a chip is even mandatory. Other animals such as rabbits, horses and birds can also be chipped.
Registration of the chip
When a chip is installed, the chip is registered in a database. This is where the owner's data is linked. The registration of the chip is just as important as the chipping itself. Because if the chip is not registered or the data is incorrect, the owner cannot be found. If you adopt or take over an animal from the shelter from someone else, it is also important that the chip is registered in your name.
