What is an insect?

Insects are animals, but very special animals. They do not have a skeleton in their body, as we do and most animals we know, such as the dog and the cat. You don't see our skeleton. Insects do have a skeleton, but it is 'external'. It is visible. Scientists call animals that have this arthropods, but not all arthropods are insects. Thus, within the group of arthropods, there is a group of animals that we call insects. Small insects have many enemies as you probably already know. Indoors, we humans are even their worst enemy, but they have many other enemies. For example, some birds eat insects and spiders like mosquitoes. Fortunately, insects are able to protect themselves well against these enemies in various ways.
