scorpions
Scorpions (Scorpiones) are not one of the most popular types of arthropods kept at home. Yet these are also a very interesting group of arachnids. Scorpions can be found in both deserts and tropical areas. Usually between seams, crevices and edges, they like cozy spaces where they don't stand out. Dark scorpions are usually of tropical origin and light yellow/brown scorpions from the dry area. A fun fact is that scorpions protect their young well and therefore all take them on their back where they all stay neatly. Of course this looks super cute. Read more…

The Emperor Scorpion
pandinus imperator
There are several pandinus species. Because they can grow to +/- 15 cm, this variety is very popular. This scorpion is not very aggressive and can even be kept with several at a time if they have enough space. A large stay is therefore really a priority! A scorpion sting can be quite painful and is similar to a bee or wasp sting. This scorpion lives in Africa in the rainforest in mainly moist places, so it also keeps it moist in its habitat. This can be done by means of a mist and irrigation system or by spraying by hand. It is best to keep it moist on one side and a little drier on the other side so that he can decide for himself where he feels best at that moment. Zoo Med Repti Bark or Back Zoo Nature Bark bedding is the right ground cover for these scorpions. Keep it between 25 to 30 degrees during the day and ensure a humidity of around 80%. The species Pandinus imperator gigas grows even larger and can grow up to 25 cm.
Also available from us: Pandinus gambiensis and the Pandinus dictator. You can find our store in The Hague.
Hadrurus ar sonssis
Compared to the Pandinus, this is a completely different species of scorpion. This scorpion lives in the desert in the Arizona area, the United States and Mexico. This scorpion to be kept alone is more aggressive than the Emperor Scorpion and the bite can be quite annoying. Desert sand is the right ground cover for these scorpions and keep it between 25 to 30 degrees during the day and the humidity should remain around 55 %.
