I would like a reptile or amphibian

Am I suitable for a reptile/amphibian?

Ask yourself what you expect from your animal:

Some animals can hardly be seen while other animals show themselves very often.

There are animals that are very good at camouflage and animals that are very colorful. Terrarium animals are real viewing animals, you cannot pick up most of them regularly. Some terrarium animals live up to 15 years or older! Do you like this too? Do you find it no problem to feed food animals? Do you have enough space for a terrarium?

Who will take care of your animal when you are not there?

What if you go on vacation? Do you have someone who can take care of your reptile/amphibian? Most people have no experience with reptiles and are sometimes even afraid of them. Of course you want your pets to be well cared for.

If you can't find anyone who can take care of your animal, you can try it at your local terrarium shop or enthusiast's association. Another option is to temporarily house your animal with someone else, making sure that all animals are housed separately. Please check this well in advance!

What kind of reptile or amphibian do I want to buy?

Of course they come in all shapes and sizes. Take a good look at the species that interests you. Many terrarium animals need live food. Watch this carefully if you decide not to give this. There are also certain requirements that the residence must meet. Think of its size or layout. How big is the space you have for your terrarium? Carefully check all the needs of your animal.

A few examples of beginner terrarium animals are: Bearded dragons, most frogs and toads, House geckos, Long-tailed lizards etc.

1 Animal or several?

Many reptiles and amphibians can live as a pair or in groups. But there are also those who prefer to live alone. In any case, never just put several animals together. This is to prevent quarrels and injuries. Do you want a terrarium with several animal species together? Then be well informed at Avonturia† This is often chosen for animals that live in the same climate and can tolerate each other.

Where will I purchase my terrarium animal?

It is important to purchase your pet from a reliable address. Of course you want to be sure that it is healthy and meets your expectations. Think of an experienced grower or someone who grows professionally.

Ask for good advice on the following topics:

  1. Choice of animal.
  2. Way of feeding.
  3. Housing.
  4. Offspring/breeding.

Regardless of where you buy the animal, it is wise to make a list of any questions or matters that you will need to pay attention to. If you have any doubts, don't make a decision yet and get well informed first!

Are you ready for it?

Before the animal comes into the house, make sure that everything is ready. The terrarium should already be fully furnished. It is wise to have the terrarium set up before, so that you can keep a close eye on the humidity and temperature and it will be completely in order when your animal comes. It is also useful to agree with the family which rules there will be. When can the terrarium be opened? (possibly lock) Do not tap on the windows. Always wash your hands before and after working in and around the terrarium. Use solid products for cleaning your terrarium and make sure they are not used for other things.

Take it home!

Arrange a suitable transport box for transport, often you can also get this from the grower/shop. Also consider a possible heat source, the animals must stay warm. For this you can think of a jug or heat pack. In any case, try to make the transport as comfortable as possible to avoid stress!

Start shopping for your future roommate.
